Beverly Hills Lifestyle: So how did you become the host of the World’s Greatest Drinking Show, Three Sheets?
Zane Lamprey: In 2005 I auditioned for a show on the Food Network. The Food Network wasn’t looking for a comedic host, so when I was leaving the audition I took a wrong turn and ran into the camera guy who walked me out and basically told me I would be perfect for this show called Three Sheets. He explained that the premise of the show was basically about a guy who travels and drinks. “is that something you would be interested in?” Yea, I would be interested in that! We hear a lot of talk in this industry, so I was skeptical and said,”well let me know when your ready to start shooting.”
This camera guy turned out to be the owner of the production company and I heard back from him a week later. A month after that I was at a Polish Social Club in Seattle shooting the pilot for Three Sheets. I showed up more than prepared on the history of Poland, Polish drinking customs, and then asked what they wanted me to do. They told me it’s your show, do what you want. They then started to follow me around as I mugged for the camera and did all the funny things I do on Three Sheets today.
BHL: You’ve travelled all over the world for your show Three Sheets, where is your favorite destination?
ZL: You know, that would be like picking a favorite child or sibling. Actually, it would probably be a bit easier to pick a favorite sibling. We pick the places we travel to because they are all amazing destinations. Whether they are a city, country, or region we go to have a great drink, experience a drinking custom, or some sort of drinking history. How can I pick a favorite when I’ve been to Tahiti, Tanzania, New Zealand,Croatia, or driven a Ferrari around Tuscany through Sienna. Those are all pretty amazing experiences. I don’t think I could pick just one favorite. I couldn’t even tell you which one I wouldn’t want to go back to.
BHL: Where is the scariest country you’ve traveled in search for theperfect drink?
ZL: The scariest experienced I’ve had was in Costa Rica. We literally feel lucky to have walked away and be alive. From San Jose we hopped in a van and headed towards the coast. We were driving on a four lane road towards a bridge that then turned into one lane. We eventually ending up in a situation going head-on with a semi-truck carrying a bunch of logs that was going to drive us off the road. Needless to say we lived and I had some choice words for the driver. I don’t lose my temper very often but I did then because the driver put my life at risk.
BHL: Three Sheets temporarily ended when the MOJO network went off the air, I’m sure you were shocked when the hit show wasn’t immediately picked up by another network. What did you do to save Three Sheets?
ZL: MOJO was great, and it was a privilege to be a part of their network. I was surprised when we weren’t picked up right away but I think that people were possibly intimidated by the subject matter. I knew we needed to let people know this show can’t go away. So I called on the fans to be a part of saving Three Sheets with “Save Three Sheets” rallies. I marched the streets with hundreds of fans through Beverly Hills and New York City to find a network to buy the show. We caused a pretty big scene and we were kind of like a mob. It essentially worked and the Fine Living Network picked up the show.
The fans really saved the show, and that’s a great feeling. So now we’re on FLN and I’m telling you we could not be in a better place. They want to make it the number one show on the network. There are 50 episodes of Three Sheets so you can watch repeat episodes from the first 3 seasons and A) you might learn something you didn’t pick up from the first time or B) you can watch the show and play the drinking game. [The show has rules and can be an actual drinking game.]
BHL: Aside from hosting the show, you’ve been throwing some huge parties like Zane Years Eve, Zane Patrick’s Day, and Zanetoberfest. Why did you decide to start hosting parties?
ZL: The parties started with Zane Crawls which we did in several big cities throughout the country. I wanted to recreate an international experience for the fans to not only drink but learn about different cultures. The biggest complaints we got from the fans wasn’t the price but how quickly the event sold out. We then started doing bigger, better events for a cheaper price. The next big event will be Zanetoberfest which is coming up for $40 bucks in New York City, which is going to feel just like the real Oktoberfest in Munich. I will be wearing lederhosen, as if that’s not enough. I’m pretty good at having a good time and people know that. I think people that watch the show want to party with me. The most common email, twitter, or Facebook message I receive is people asking how can I party with you for a night? So we’re trying to do that for the fans and give them a tiny bit of culture and fun.
BHL: Thank you so much, Zane, for your time and for hosting the world’s greatest drinking show. [To see Three Sheets episodes, buy merchandise, and hear about upcoming Zane Festivals check out www.zanelamprey.com.]
