Ever since patrons were greeted by Bing Crosby in 1937, Opening Day at the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club has been a highlight of the San Diego County social calendar. 40,000+ racing fans attend the fabulous, fashionable and fun festivities. Opening Day is an event at which to be seen; a raucous party-like atmosphere with patrons primping, flirting, laughing, betting, drinking, and chilling in exclusive elegance at the posh Turf Club.

The crowd roars as the starting gates open, the frenzy building until “down the stretch they come.” More than just a day about big bets and fast horses, stylish guests participate in Del Mar’s annual tradition, the “One and Only Truly Fabulous Hats Contest” where entrants are judged on creativity and panache. As Bing Crosby sang: “A smile on every face and a winner in every race, the turf meets the surf in old Del Mar.”
